Learning Statistics
People sometimes give a comment about something or make predictions without knowing the exact procedure of making decission or making prediction.We say sachin Tandulkar is the best.some says Bryan Lara is the best.To decide a good cricketer we need batting average ,scoring average not the total scores .The students as well as the public should know the exact procedure to make a decission and prediction about income,poverty line and annual budget etc.
Essential question or problem that this project addresses:-
Who is the best cricketer?
Curriculum standards:-
Meaning of statistics,
steps of statistics,
collection of data,data analysis,graph plotting.
mean,median,mode calculation and their uses in daily life.
Expected outcomes:-
The students will learn
• Concept of central tendency.
• Steps and procedure of statistics.
• Calculation of mean, median, mode .
• Appropriate use in daily life to make some declaration and making decission and future prediction about the population ,sex ratio ,average income etc.
. It will develop the 21st century skills technology,team work,creativity,comminication,critical thinking,self direction etc.

How will this project help the class, school, community or world?
The purpose of the project is to create knowledge among students and to contribute the knowledge in the development of tools to help people transform statistics(mean,median and mode) into knowledge and decisions about the average salary,average income of a country ,poverty line .
The project aims at constucting knowledge about the use of statistics which is beyond the traditional stastistics that only calculation of mean,median and mode.
For capturing their artifacts thinkquest pages will be the medium.

Sometimes we find that the people make a decision about a fact without verifying .If we ask who is the best cricketer some says "Sachin Tendulkar",some replies "M.S.Dhoni".As they do not know the exact procedure of judging a cricketer.
The purpose of the project is to

*You will learn the technology to calculate mean,median,mode .(using computer).
*It will develop communication skill,team work spirit and technology skill.
WHAT ARE THE ACTIVITIES WE HAVE TO DO?
*We have to do a research work in the library and surfing internet to find about what is statistics,what are the procedures,what are the tools,formulae used for .
*We have to use an interaction tool for more knowledge.
*We will survey in the school canteen to find what is the total sale for 6 days continuosly to find mean sale.
*We have collect marks in a particular subjects in a paricular test to find mean and median.
*we will collect the data about any information(favourite cricketor) to find mode.
*From the time to time according to the teacher's instuction we have to upload the findings in thinkquest pages.

They have to represent whole procedure with power point presentation.
Each group will make some prediction based on the mean calculation.
The work will be evaluated on the basis of power point Rubric mentioned on the page of evaluation.

Each group will collect the marks of 2nd unit test of their group members. Each sdudent will calculate mean,median and mode using MS.Excel. Each sudent will upload the page in the page of integration with technology.

Each group will name five players to be included in IPL-2009.
Each individual may predict 5 players who will play better in IPL-2009.
They should explain the statistics on the base of which they make the conclusion.
They may include the previous records,graphs continuity and other things which are necessary for the predictions.
Research Report
Statistics is a very important branch of
mathematics and Mean, Median and Mode has worthful position in statistics. So
we thought of doing this project to enhance our knowledge on the use if mean,
median and mode.
Today’s world has become information oriented
and thus it has urged us to learn to extract information from a whole lot of
data. This is what we call statistics.
One ways of summarizing data is through the
process of finding their average or arithmetic mean. It is calculated by adding
the observation and then dividing it by the number of observation. It is an
important aspect of statistics and we deal with it at every step of our life.
We all love sports and generally it is referred to cricket. During the last
test matches we often heard from the T.V commentators that India is doing
well in these matches. These comments were based on the average score retrieved
by India
in these test matches. A teacher uses mean for calculating the average marks
scored by the students. It is extensively used in practical statistics.
Estimates are always obtained by arithmetic mean. Business man uses it to find
out the operation cost, profit per unit article, and output per man and per
machine, average monthly income and expenditure. It has its extensive use in
diet chart. The average height and weight of a child is very important for the
well being.
The second important aspect is median. The
middle of an arranged data is called its median. The good thing about median is
that it can be represented graphically. It is used when it concerns difference
in blood pressure of a person is to be noted, while calculating matters
regarding salary in an office, median is also used. It also finds its use in
formation of the poverty line.
The last but not the least is mode. The most
common frequency of the data is called its mode. In general people comment on a
sportsman by seeing the number of records made by them. In cricket a cricketer
is judged by the number of centuries made by him in the last few matches (the
mode is then the centuries). While choosing something it is mode which is used
(by counting the number of supporters). The elections which are held for
determining the next big power also implies the policy of mode. The popularity
of films is judged by the number of viewers saying good things regarding the
film.
Thus, we can see how important mean, median
and mode is in our life and how big impact it has on us without our knowledge.
So to know more on the most obvious branch of mathematics we start with mean,
median and mode.
